Wilton Gregory

Today Wilton Gregory, Washington DC archbishop, is set to become the first Black American cardinal in the Catholic Church.  Gregory, age 72, was ordained in his native Chicago in 1973; and served as archbishop of Atlanta from 2005 to 2020 when he was appointed to the Washington DC archdiocese.  Gregory stated:  "With a very grateful and humble heart, I thank Pope Francis for this appointment which will allow me to work more closely with him in caring for Christ's Church."
