What Would Barth Say? (Christian Century, September 23, 2020)

Will Willimon thinks pastors could learn about dealing with the pandemic from Karl Barth's example. During World War I Barth never mentioned the war in his wartime sermons, even though he thought it was a disaster and amounted to just wages for nationalistic sin.  He continually preached instead on the privilege of living in "a unique time of God."

His message speaks to our current situation.  Says Willimon: "God has thrust us into an exceptionally apocalyptic age of unveiling in which the folly of our Promethean myths [is] self-evident and our dependency upon God is undeniable."       (Plough, July 22)
