Commentary on Luke 22:35-38

"Give the disciples credit: they know this is not Galilee with its success stories and pressing crowds of people favorably impressed; this is Jerusalem, danger moving in on them, and they are in a life-and-death situation. And give the disciples some sympathy: they respond to danger by instinct, sword for sword, weapon for weapon, blow for blow; that is, prepare for danger by becoming dangerous.  This is not, of course, the way of Jesus; this contradicts the very nature of the reign of God.  But we should not be overly critical of them when, after twenty centuries, many who name Jesus as Lord not only endorse the way of the sword but also personally subscribe to the view that violence ends violence."
