Hunger Moon

Tonight's Full Moon is called the "Full Snow" moon or sometimes "Hunger Moon" by North American Indians. Usually the heaviest snows fall in February. Hunting becomes very difficult, and hence to some Native American tribes this was the Hunger Moon.

It is said that the Cherokees maintained that if you could make it through February, then you had it made for the rest of the year. But February itself was a lean, last segment of wintertime. February was trial by hardship.
