A devotional thought for January 11

Mark 1:1, 9-11

The beginning of the good news of Jesus Christ, the Son of God.

In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptized by John in the Jordan. And just as he was coming out of the water, he saw the heavens torn apart and the Spirit descending like a dove on him.  And a voice came from heaven, "You are my Son, the Beloved; with you I am well pleased."

Baptism marks the beginning of good news in the life of Jesus Christ, and baptism marks a new beginning in life for us as well.  Baptism may well be understood not as something completed, but as the beginning of the Christian's pilgrimage of faith.

When Jesus was baptized in the Jordan River by John, he heard the Voice of God reminding him that he was God's Son, the Beloved, and that God was well pleased with him.  What an affirmation.

In our new beginnings in baptism, we also become one of God's beloved children.  May we also live in such a way that God will be well pleased with us as well.
