Premiums Show Price of Affordable Care Act

Physicians Health Plan of Northern Indiana is coming up with answers to a question that's concerned people since 2010: How much will insurance cost under "Obamacare"?

PHP, 8101 W. Jefferson Blvd. in Fort Wayne, is one of only four insurance companies approved to sell policies in Indiana through the federally operated Health Insurance Exchange (others include Anthem, Coordinated Care, and MDWise).

The company has reconfigured its policies for individual buyers to meet requirements imposed by the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, commonly known as Obamacare, which goes into effect in January, and has calculated the premiums it will charge.

The average price the company projects is $260 per month, according to PHP's filings with state regulators. But that price can vary tremendously, depending on the number of people in a family, the ages of those insured, whether any of them use tobacco and where they live.  read more
