Today's Birthday

Today is the birthday of Anna Bartlett Warner, born on this day in 1820 in New York.  Her mother died soon after she was born and, following the business depressions of mid-century, her father had to be supported by Anna and her sister Susan.  Both sisters were authors, although not very successful.

Warner's children's stories were primarily intended for Sunday School readers and, somewhat unusual, is that not all of these stories had happy endings.  Anna is best know for a song that appeared in a particular scene of  her book Say and Seal (1860), in which the hero walks the floor with a dying child singing:

Jesus loves me! This I know
For the Bible tells me so.
Little ones to him belong,
They are weak but He is strong.
