I read in the newspaper this morning that Betty James, co-founder of the Slinky company in the 1950s, died this past Thursday at the age of 90. She came up with the name "Slinky" after seeing the word (meaning “sleek and graceful”) in the dictionary. She later took over management of James Industries Inc. 14 years after the company was founded, after her husband left her to follow a religious cult in Bolivia.

I can remember the year one of us kids first received a slinky as a Christmas gift. What an enjoyable time we had playing with this strange bit of "walking" metal. Thanks to those with creative imaginations who make simple toys so much fun.
