Three Stages of Life

Dr. George F. MacLeod, writing in The Coracle, the newsletter of the Iona Community, wrote an article on the stages of life observed by Saint Columba.

In the tradition of Columba's time, there were three stages which every man had to achieve if his development was to be complete - the quest of youth, the mission of maturity, and the free pilgrimage of age: the first, the training and conquest of self; the second, service to others; and finally, the achievement of that inner freedom that releases him from all earthly ties, so that he is really motivated as a pilgrim, know this world's system is alien, his home already in Heaven.
