Happy Birthday, Walt!

It was on December 5, 1901 that Elias and Flora Disney gave birth to a son whom they named Walter Elias Disney.  Walt, as he came to be known, began taking night classes at the Chicago Art Institute when he was a freshman in high school and became the cartoonist for the school newspaper.
Walt dropped out of high school at the age of 16 to join the army but was rejected because he was underage.
He later became a cartoonist and created such familiar characters as Mickey Mouse, Donald Duck, Goofy and Pluto.
A dream of creating an amusement park came true in 1955 with the opening of Disneyland. His death in 1966 came nearly five years before the opening of Disney World in 1971.
